It's true. Naked was the official uniform. They competed not as Athenians or Spartans or Thracians, but as men. Married women weren't allowed to attend but girls were, probably hearking back to the event's origins in rites devoted to Demeter, goddess of fertility. The girls would eagerly line the stadion, or racecourse, to see their nostrils flare and their testicles bounce like high-spirited stallions. Not a bad time to be a girl, all told.
