They were pretty strict about this, the Athenians anyway. In the myth of Diana and Actaeon
http://www.luminarium.org/mythology/actaeon.htm
a young hunter, deep in the woods, accidentally intrudes upon the goddess Diana bathing in a spring and, perforce, naked. She at once turns him into a stag and he is rent asunder by his own hounds, who are of course ultimately loyal to Diana, Goddess of the Hunt. The thing is, there was a fair amount of male nudity in that time and place. Olympians vyed in the nude, for example, and yes, there were girls in the bleachers (though not married women). As for the girls, they had their own separate event, at which they competed in demure tunics- sorry, guys.
The male body was celebrated, but the female body was venerated. Vive la difference!
Perhaps not coincidentally, it was a time of learning and scientific achievement.

@coleopter yes, cfnm was the social norm in Ancient Greece. Female nudity was as taboo as it is today, yet there was no stigma against male nudity.
